Your First Strokes: The Gliding Swim

Two triathletes, same physical condition, same pool. One glides, the other thrashes. The difference isn't in their muscles, it's in their technique. Swimming is the most technical of the three triathlon disciplines, and that's a good thing for you: here, you can gain a lot without pushing harder, simply by gliding better. In this module, you'll lay the foundations of freestyle, the stroke that will carry you in the race. You'll learn to float high, breathe calmly, and feel relaxed, lap after lap. We're not looking for speed right away. We're looking for the feeling of gliding. The rest will come naturally.

    What you'll learn

    • You understand why freestyle is the go-to swim stroke for triathlon, and you know the role of other strokes.
    • You establish a horizontal, gliding posture by aligning your head, torso, and hips, with your nose pointed towards the bottom.
    • You coordinate calm, rhythmic side breathing with a light leg kick for a few laps, staying relaxed.
    • You feel that your engaged core maintains your posture in the water – a reflex to cultivate all season long.
    • You prioritize feel and consistency over volume, because it's the quality of your movement that makes you progress.
